To copyright something that was created for the web all you have to do is create in and publish it on the web. By doing this, you have copyrighted that item.
Traditional copyright is different because you would have to patent an idea in order to get it traditionally copyrighted.

Copyright infringement means that you are copying something without permission from the owner. Copyright infringement is a crime because you are stealing the owner’s rights to grant permission to use that copyrighted item. Fair use would mean that you got permission to copy that item from the owner and that you use it to the owner’s permission. The owner may have you create a link to his or her site in order to allow you to put copyrighted items on your page.

I think that copyrighting is not a big deal unless someone was to make money from it. If someone photocopied a picture out of a magazine then sold that picture online, then it would be a major problem. But, if someone was just going to put that picture into a personal web page and not trying to make a profit off of it, then I think that would be fine.
